WAN Management Overview

The EMCOM approach to WAN monitoring is based on a few fundamental principles. First, the monitoring device must be faster than the circuit it is watching in order to capture all the data on the circuit, even as it becomes congested. The monitoring device must also have compute and memory capabilities sufficient to process all the data that is captured. And, finally, the system must be able to capture data at sufficiently short intervals in order to capture meaningful data.

The EMCOM system's architecture allows it to collect data at 15-second intervals without introducing additional overhead traffic on the monitored circuit. This level of detail is critical for troubleshooting by generating true real-time alerts. It also enhances capacity planning by revealing line congestion that is concealed in averages when a longer data collection interval is used.

See why 15-Second Granularity is important.

Effective network performance management requires proactive monitoring and control of a lot of variables in a complex, fast-changing environment. The EMCOM WAN Management System makes your entire network visible while also providing detailed data on specific problem links, enabling you to ensure the health of the whole network. The EMCOM system ...

  • Dependably monitors all traffic on all circuits all the time, so you are guaranteed that performance data is complete, that statistics derived from them are accurate and that reliable WAN service is delivered to all end-users.
  • Automatically analyzes and consolidates this detail into usable, meaningful performance reports that you need, when you need them.
  • Provides superior fault management by pinpointing and alerting you to those hard-to-find, exotic details that are often the true but usually unknown cause of serious network malfunction.
  • Immediately works with any router or bridge, whether Frame Relay, SMDS or leased-line, for any protocol you use, so that the value of your investment in the tools is protected over the long-term.
  • Precisely and automatically documents all protocol and sub-protocol distributions, peak bursts, and congestion events that occur on each circuit and each PVC.
  • Features a robust, performance-oriented design architecture, thus ensuring that it never misses frames, is easily extensible, and is scaleable to thousands of serial WAN links so it can grow with your needs.
  • Constantly monitors your LEC and IXC providers' performance with granularity sufficient to detect all abnormal conditions.
  • Installs quickly and easily, is automatically configured, and runs itself, so that users can be trained and the system fully operational in a couple of hours.
  • Provides complete performance detail, enabling you to negotiate and enforce carrier service level agreements.
  • Ensures that new applications can be successfully 'rolled-out' onto the Enterprise WAN, that malfunctioning applications can be tracked and corrected, and that renegade and non-standard WAN traffic can be immediately revealed.
